Most visitors never make it north of the cultural triangle. Which is exactly why this trip is worth taking. The north is a different island: drier, flatter, stranger, and quieter than almost anywhere in the south. Jaffna's Hindu temples, Dutch forts and remarkable cuisine are unlike anything else in Sri Lanka. Mannar's ancient baobab trees — planted by Arab traders — and its view across the sea to India feel genuinely otherworldly.
This is Sri Lanka for travellers who have done the postcard version and want to understand what the country actually is.

- Mannar Fort — a 1558 Portuguese star fort, later expanded by the Dutch; the oldest fort in Sri Lanka 🏰
- Adam's Bridge viewpoint — the chain of limestone shoals stretching toward India across the Palk Strait, mentioned in the Ramayana
- The Ancient Baobab — a vast baobab tree believed to be over 700 years old, planted by Arab traders; the only one of its kind in Sri Lanka 🌳
- Mannar's remarkable birdlife — the island is on the Central Asian Flyway: flamingos, pelicans, painted storks in season
- Jaffna Fort — a 1618 Portuguese fort, rebuilt by the Dutch into a star-shaped masterpiece of military engineering; partially flooded moat, intact ramparts
- The old Dutch Governor's residence inside the fort walls
- Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil — Jaffna's most important Hindu temple, dedicated to Murugan; a spectacular Dravidian gopuram painted in gold and coral 🏮
- Evening puja with drums, incense and garlands — one of the most atmospheric religious ceremonies in Sri Lanka
- During the Nallur Festival (Jul–Aug): 25 days of processions, fire-walking and chariot ceremonies
- Ferry from Kurikattuwan Jetty to Nainativu island — a small pilgrimage island with two important shrines
- Nagapooshani Amman Temple — a celebrated Hindu temple where pilgrims come from across South Asia; the ferry crossing itself is a spectacle 🙏
- Naga Deepa Buddhist Vihara — one of the 16 sacred Buddhist sites in Sri Lanka; the Buddha is said to have visited the island
- Return ferry via Punkudutivu
- Point Pedro — the northernmost point of Sri Lanka; lighthouse, fishing harbour, the sense of being at the edge of the map 🗺️
- Casuarina Beach — a long, empty stretch of pale sand fringed with casuarina trees; calm, clean and usually deserted
- Jaffna Public Library — the recently restored library, one of the largest in Asia; its destruction in 1981 was a turning point in the country's history
- Ferry to Delft Island (Neduntheevu) — the most remote of the Jaffna islands, 35km offshore
- Wild Delft ponies — descendants of Dutch-imported horses, now feral; they roam freely across the flat, windswept island 🐴
- Ruins of the Dutch Fort (1640s) and a baobab tree rivalling Mannar's in age
- Ancient dove-cotes built by the Dutch — hundreds of them, still standing
- The island has no cars and about 5,000 residents — one of the most unusual places in Sri Lanka
- Early morning dolphin watching boat — Kalpitiya's offshore waters host pods of several hundred spinner dolphins year-round 🐬
- Peak season Oct–Apr when pods of 1,000+ are not unusual
- Blue whales occasionally spotted Nov–Apr in the outer waters
- The boat trip takes you across the Bar Reef, Sri Lanka's largest coral reef
- Kalpitiya is one of the world's premier kite surfing destinations — consistent trade winds (May–Oct), flat lagoon water, long teaching seasons
- Introductory kite surfing lesson (2 hours) with an IKO-certified instructor 🪁
- Or: stand-up paddleboarding on the calm lagoon, or a mangrove kayak
- Wilpattu National Park — Sri Lanka's largest national park, directly adjacent to Kalpitiya, easily added as a morning safari before driving south
- Wilpattu is characterised by "villus" — natural lakes in the forest that attract wildlife at dawn
- Leopard, sloth bear, elephant, spotted deer, sambar, crocodile, water buffalo 🦁
- Far less visited than Yala — a more authentic bush experience
- Galle Face Green at sunset — the long oceanfront promenade, kites and street food
- Dinner at Ministry of Crab or Nuga Gama — let us book ahead 🦀
